More about Supportive Community

Supportive Community – Women's Business Development Center
is a non-profit organization established in 2003 by a small group of businesswomen, all new immigrants from the former Soviet Union, with a common goal: to promote and support women in their economic and social integration into Israeli society through the development of micro-businesses. Supportive Community has developed a business empowerment model that is adapted to women and to a multicultural society. According to the latest research conducted by the Israel Small and Medium Enterprises Authority in 2008, Supportive Community was named one of the three most important non-government organizations in the field of women's social and economic empowerment in Israel.

Supportive Community has developed a business empowerment model that is adapted to women and to a multicultural society. This model enables women to acquire vital knowledge and tools and achieve economic and social empowerment, and provides them with opportunities to create business and social cooperation. Since 2006 Supportive Community has been coordinating KIEDF's Microfinance Loan Fund activities in the Tel-Aviv metropolitan area.

In its seven years of operation, Supportive Community has assisted over 6500 women (out of which 2,600 have participated in long-term programs) – new immigrants from the FSU and Ethiopia, native born Israelis, Jews and Arabs, Orthodox and others.  These women have come from across central Israel, from Tel-Aviv and Jaffa to Jerusalem, and from Netanya to Ashkelon. They have acquired vital knowledge and tools, economic and social empowerment and an opportunity to create business and social cooperation.

On Tuesday, March 3, 2009, the newly-elected U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met with delegates of the Supportive Community Organization.  In the meeting, she emphasized that Supportive Community "...is exactly the kind of model that Needs to be replicated, because you need a safe, SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY to test your own dreams and your own talents."  In a press conference with the Israeli Prime Minister that day, Mrs. Clinton recognized Supportive Community as an example for multicultural coexistence in Israel.
